Bracknell Forest Council is delighted to announce the election of Cllr Janet Cochrane as the new borough Mayor. Cllr Cochrane, who represents the Hanworth ward, has been actively involved in the community, serving on various committees at the Council, as well as her work with Citizens Advice East Berkshire and her involvement in Bracknell Town Council.
In her new role as Mayor, Cllr Cochrane aims to engage with voluntary groups, businesses, and schools across the borough, recognizing their significant contributions to the community. She is looking forward to meeting with local communities and carrying out mayoral duties with enthusiasm and dedication. Cllr Cochrane expressed her excitement about the year ahead, stating, “I am honoured to serve as the Mayor of Bracknell Forest. I am committed to working hard for the people of the borough and ensuring that our community continues to thrive.”
Cllr Cochrane moved to Bracknell as a mum of three boys in 1985. All three children attended Hatch Ride and Edgbarrow schools in Crowthorne. Cllr Cochrane has worked in a school as a welfare and infant assistant and also in sheltered housing for the elderly, gaining experience with a wide age range of people. She eventually opted to work as an administrator in the NHS for 35 years, working with Health Visitors, School Nurses, and District Nurses. Having retired 18 years ago, she still works a few hours per week in a Health Centre. “Having always been an unpaid carer for family members and even a couple of friends, it was not until I became a Councillor, and then Deputy Mayor, that I fully realised how much we depend on volunteers who run various charities and groups to help others less fortunate. I see the hard work and the hours they give to the people of Bracknell and we owe so much to them.”
In becoming Mayor, Cllr Cochrane hopes to provide the same dedication to the role as others have before her and is pleased to be able to serve the people of Bracknell to the best of her ability.
The new Deputy Mayor is Cllr Peter Frewer, who represents Harmans Water and Crown Wood ward.
The outgoing Mayor, Cllr Jenny Penfold, said “It has been an incredible honour to serve as the Mayor of Bracknell Forest. I have witnessed the remarkable spirit and resilience of our community. Together, we have achieved significant milestones, from enhancing local services to fostering a more inclusive and sustainable environment. I am deeply grateful for the support and collaboration of our residents, council members, and partners. As I step down, I carry with me cherished memories and a profound sense of pride in what we have accomplished. Bracknell Forest will always hold a special place in my heart.” During her tenure, Cllr Penfold raised £31,563 for her chosen charity, The Ark Trust.
