In a significant move for Australian rugby, Rugby Australia (RA) has taken over the high-performance operations of the Waratahs, marking the beginning of a strategic reset. This transfer of responsibilities, effective from January 1st, includes the management of assets, liabilities, and commercial arrangements. The NSW Rugby Union will maintain its focus on community rugby and growing the sport’s participation and engagement. This step aims to integrate the Waratahs’ professional and commercial operations with RA’s, creating a unified and efficient system. With a separate board to govern the Waratahs, comprising representatives from both NSW Rugby and RA, the move is seen as a proactive step towards resolving the unsustainable federated model of professional rugby in Australia. Paul Doorn of NSW Rugby and RA boss Phil Waugh have both expressed strong belief in the benefits of this alignment for the game’s future success.
