A care home in Bracknell hosted a heartwarming wreath-making session for residents and community members living with dementia.

Care UK’s Bickerton House, on Warfield Road, held the festive event in the home’s pub and cinema, where participants crafted their very own marvellous Christmas creations.

During the Christmas wreath-making workshop, led by the activities team, those taking part handled natural materials, like fresh greenery and ribbons — known to stimulate the senses and encourage reminiscence.

Yvonne Dulieu, who attended the workshop with her mum, said the session exceeded her expectations. She said: “It was a lovely atmosphere with Christmas music and great choice of decorations. The wreaths were beautiful, and I look forward to displaying ours.”

The creative session also encouraged cognitive engagement and emotional wellbeing, giving residents and community members the chance to build relationships in a festive atmosphere.

Michael Pallister, Home Manager at Bickerton House, said: “Our wonderful wreath-making workshop truly filled the home with the spirit of Christmas, while having many extra benefits for those living with dementia.

“Crafts and other physical activities often utilise repetitive and tactile actions, which can be particularly calming and accessible for those living with the condition. The touch and smell of the greenery during the wreath-making, along with all the decorations, also served to awaken fond Christmas memories from years gone by.

“It was fantastic to welcome members of the Bracknell community to share in our festive joy. From all of us here at Bickerton House, we wish everyone a very merry Christmas and a truly special New Year!”

Bickerton House has been designed to encourage residents to live active and fulfilling lives, while remaining as independent as possible in a safe environment. The state-of-the-art care home provides full-time residential, nursing and specialist dementia care, and features a bar and café, cinema, hair salon, activities room and garden.
